Play-Based“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”
-- Fred Rogers “Play is the foundational building block of human cognition, emotional health, and social behavior...Play improves memory and helps children learn mathematical problems in their heads, take turns, regulate their impulses, and speak with greater complexity.” -- Erika Christakis |
Nature-Inspired"Preschool educators have long known that animals, plants, water, and other aspects of the natural world delight children and draw them in as learners. ... Nature preschools have all the same child development goals that more traditional schools have, but they also are committed to accomplishing those goals through experiences in and with nature, and have an added goal of helping children begin to develop care and concern for the natural world."
-- Natural Start Alliance |
Cooperative"Taking part in a cooperative preschool allows you to be directly involved with your child’s early education. ... Interacting with a community of other parents who share your commitment to childhood and receiving modeling by the teacher as you help, gives you opportunities to learn alongside your child. Most importantly, choosing a cooperative preschool gives you extra time to bond with your child and create memories together."
-- Parent Cooperative Preschools International |
Of course, due to the coronavirus, a few things are still to be determined. For the current school year, we moved our programs entirely outdoors. Whether we will remain fully outdoors or will adapt to a hybrid indoor/outdoor program will be a decision made in the summer of 2021 based on current health data and recommendations.

Giving Children A Natural StartHunters Woods Cooperative Preschool is a play-based, nature-inspired, family participation preschool. Experienced early childhood educators plan curriculum and instruction, and families take turns helping with school-time activities.
Our school is designed to encourage preschool-aged children (2, 3, 4 and 5 year olds) to develop a sense of worthiness, a sense of ability, a sensitivity towards others and the world around them. Our emergent curriculum gives children experiences with and in nature, and is responsive to individual and group interests, needs, and abilities. We provide the children with materials and equipment, along with time, space, and guidance to support their individual development. |
